On average, 22 veterans take their own lives every day. This is a pandemic that can be solved simply by letting people know there are answers to their questions. Drew Kostic was a U.S. Marine veteran who attended Northwestern Michigan College. He was a part of the Student Veterans of America (SVA) and was active in the community. Drew and Lucas Clark of the SVA performed outreach missions in the community to raise awareness about veteran suicide. Even though he was aware of how and where to get help, Drew took his own life on December 18th 2016.
Veterans suffering from PTSD or TBI go through emotional instability and feelings of worthlessness, doubt and what can feel like an endless cycle of treatment with no light at the end of the tunnel.
We are putting this race together in an effort to continue to raise awareness about veteran suicide. This is not only for veterans to receive information and help, but also for civilians to gain the knowledge about how to help their veteran friends and family.
There are millions of success stories about veterans who have conquered the demons of PTSD, TBI, alcohol / drug addictions and unhealthy lifestyles. But there are still too many losing the fight.
Join us for the DK5K to raise awareness, help fight the fight within and support our veteran heroes.
Funds raised from this year's DK5K will be given to local organizations that offer free services for veterans. These are 22-2-NONE and Reining Liberty Ranch, with a portion also going to the Drew Kostic Memorial Scholarship.
